Course Formats

The American Heart Association offers training in a variety of formats.

Classroom

100% classroom training means students are with an AHA instructor for their entire learning experience. These classroom courses are a good option for students who learn most effectively in a classroom environment with other students. These courses are taught by AHA Instructors, who administer both the cognitive portion of the course and hands-on skills practice and testing.

Blended

Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner online, followed by a hands-on session. The hands-on session is completed in person with an AHA Instructor or using a Voice Assisted Manikin (VAM), where available. Successful blended learning can reach students with varying learning styles and in different environments. It combines the flexibility of online training with skills practice and testing for CPR and other psychomotor skills.

Healthcare Professional Courses

These courses are intended for Healthcare Professionals who may require a completion card for their job. Topics include CPR and AED, Basic or Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Stroke training, and more. Please contact your employer to ensure that you are selecting the correct course from the list below.

ACLS – Instructor-Led Training

This advanced course highlights the importance of high-performance team dynamics and communication, systems of care, recognition and intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, immediate post-cardiac arrest, acute dysrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes (ACS).

ACLS for Experienced Providers (ACLS EP)

Expands on the core ACLS guidelines through cooperative learning to improve outcomes in complex cardiovascular, respiratory and other (e.g., metabolic, toxicologic) emergencies. Through instruction and active participation in case-based scenarios, learners enhance their skills in the differential diagnosis and treatment of prearrest, arrest, and postarrest patients.

HeartCode® ACLS

HeartCode® ACLS is a self-directed, comprehensive eLearning program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. To enter the course, students must complete a precourse self-assessment. Students will then be presented with a team dynamics lesson and 10 In-hospital patient cases, including a BLS case and 2 megacode cases.

Students who successfully complete the online portion of the course receive a certificate granting them access to a ACLS Hands-on Session with an AHA ACLS Instructor or with a voice-assisted manikin (VAM). Students must successfully complete both the online portion and the hands-on session to receive a PALS Provider course completion card.

Features

  • Updated science and education reflecting the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC
  • Enhanced learning experience through eSimulations, life-like animations, and realistic scenarios
  • Advanced, evidence-based resuscitation education and skills critical to the Chain of Survival
  • Enhanced course structure and scenarios to ensure immediate preparedness in real-world situations

Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS)

This classroom, Instructor-led course teaches healthcare providers the foundational skills needed to assess, recognize, and participate in the initial management of respiratory and/or cardiovascular emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest in pediatric patients. This Instructor-led classroom course aims to improve outcomes for pediatric patients by teaching students to assess, recognize, and manage respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest until the child or infant is transferred to an advanced life support provider.

Neonatal Resuscitation Program

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is an educational program jointly sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA). The course has been designed to teach an evidence-based approach to resuscitation of the newborn to hospital staff who care for newborns at the time of delivery, including physicians, nurses, advanced practice nurses, nurse midwives, licensed midwives, respiratory care practitioners, and other healthcare professionals who provide direct care during neonatal resuscitation.

S.T.A.B.L.E. program

S.T.A.B.L.E. is the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants. Based on a mnemonic to optimize learning, retention, and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support. A seventh module, Quality Improvement stresses the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants.

TNCC

ENA developed and implemented the TNCC training certification for national and international dissemination as a means of identifying a standardized body of trauma nursing knowledge. The TNCC (Provider) is a 16 or 20-hour course designed to provide the learner with cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills.

**In order to receive TNCC certification, you must be a Registered Nurse.**
